There are several village/town festivals around the Faroe Islands each summer, starting in Klaksvík with Norðoyastevna in early June and ending in Tórshavn with the Ólavsøka (Sct. Olav’s Festival), which is the national holiday of the Faroe Islands. This photo was taken at Jóansøka (Sct. John’s Festival or Midsummer Festival) in Vágur in Suðuroy (South Island) in the end of June. There are several competitions, starting with the children at 1 o’clock in the afternoon, the adults start two hours later and continue until 5 og 6 in the afternoon. There are 4 different kinds of boats for 6, 8 and 10 rowers. The boats are called 5-mannafør, 6-mannafør, 8-mannafør and 10-mannafør. There is one person who steers the boat. All the boats are wooden boats. Two persons sit beside each other and row with a slim wooden oar. In Vágur all the boats row 1000 meters, in Tórshavn it is the same. But in most places the largest boats the 10-mannafør row 2000 meters and the 8-mannafør are rowing 1500 meters. This photo was taken during the "5-mannafør dreingir" (5-men boat for boys) competition. The boat from Vágur, Royndin Fríða, won. Here is the restult for all the boats in the 5-mannafør for boys at Jóansøka.
