The song we’re playing alternates between E flats and E naturals, but I’m not quite sure what the difference is. The note I’m talking about here is the E on the D string (first finger). How do you play each of these notes? I feel like they’re both played by a low first finger, but that really doesn’t seem or sound right.

If you don’t know what the nut of the violin is, it’s the part between the scroll and the fingerboard that is just a little bump. With E flat, your finger is very close to the nut, if not touching. In E natural, your finger will be further from the nut and touching your second finger. If you have a good ear, try listening to what sounds right to you. It sounds amateur, but your own ear is the best tuner.
