Mere Christianity
In the classic Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis, the most important writer of the 20th century, explores the common ground upon which all of those of Christian faith stand together. Bringing together Lewis’ legendary broadcast talks during World War Two from his three previous books The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality, Mere Christianity provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear this powerful apologetic for the Christian faith.
In 1943 Great Britain, when hope and the moral fabric of society were threatened by the relentless inhumanity of global war, an Oxford don was invited to give a series of radio lectures addressing the central issues of Christianity. Over half a century after the original lectures, the topic retains it urgency. Expanded into book form, Mere Christianity never flinches as it sets out a rational basis for Christianity and builds an edifice of compassionate morality atop this foundation. As Mr. Lewis clearly demonstrates, Christianity is not a religion of flitting angels and blind faith, but of free will, an innate sense of justice and the grace of God.

Join Our Day of Action:
Our 2013 Day of Action is centered around the PACT5 campaign, in which students from five institutions (Rowan University, California State University at Northridge, Western State Colorado University, and Framingham State University) created documentaries focused on sexual assault which are available for free at www.pact5.org. We hope you will join us for our Day of Action on September 25, 2013 and encourage your students, faculty, and staff to make the PACT:
… I am aware that sexual assault can happen to anyone at any time.
… I believe we can end sexual assault through education.
… I will always be sure of genuine consent before any sexual activity.
… I will take action if I see a situation that could lead to sexual assault.
… I commit to learning more and promoting the PACT.
For information on how to participate in the Day of Action and a PACT5 handout to use while tabling, please see the handouts at the bottom of this page.

‘S.H.OUT Week’ educates students on prevention measures

This week universities around the country are observing a week dedicated to anti-hazing measures. Entitled “S.H.OUT Week: Shut Hazing Out,” Florida State University held its annual hazing awareness week a week earlier than the national norm in order to coincide with other university intiatives.
Throughout S.H.OUT Week, from Sept. 15 to Sept. 18, there was a multi-lateral effort on the part of university-wide sponsors, including Student Activities Center, Campus Recreation, University Athletics, the Interfraternity Council and the Vice President for Student Affairs.
Robyn Brock, assistant dean of students and director of Greek Life, emphasized a university-wide effort for the week that focused on raising awareness for all students on the issue of hazing.
“We chose our dates a week earlier than the national week because we wanted to partner with the efforts of the Uphold the Garnet and Gold committee on one big event,” Brock said.
Brock further noted that Florida has one of the toughest hazing laws in the nation. The Chad Meredith Act “creates new criminal offenses specific to hazing at the high school or college level” according to Florida State University’s Hazing Prevention Website, and draws the distinction between a first, second and third degree hazing offense based on severity of circumstances.
Hazing in the Florida State University’s code of conduct is defined as “any group or individual action or activity that endangers the mental or physical health or safety or which may demean, disgrace or degrade any person, regardless of location, intent or consent of participant(s).”
A Sept. 15 address by Mike Dilbeck on “Being an Everyday Hero” initiated S.H.OUT Week’s events. Dilbeck is the founder and president of the RESPONSE ABILITY (RA), a national project to promote bystander intervention.
Dilbeck’s talk focused on making a difference or impact in our community, and how even students have the power to affect that positive change. This includes the standing up and taking action, speaking out and protecting others.
Brock agreed that this discussion was a great way to introduce the week and to inspire students to make the difference for others in their lives with hazing prevention.
Citing a 2008 University of Maine study measuring students who report experiencing hazing behavior in college, Brock said that 90 percent of students do not consider themselves to have been hazed.
Raising awareness in this regard is extremely important Brock stated, because typically, hazing has been considered by-and-large in physical extremes. It is not something widely wanted to be discussed, and the theme of S.H.OUT was intended to make students more comfortable with speaking out on this issue.
Within the week’s events on Monday a focused email campaign message was sent out, with a specialized effort to spread the word, raising hazing awareness, to presidents of clubs and organizations. Using the “#ShutHazingOUT” tag on Twitter, university accounts opened social media as a forum to discuss hazing issue.
Wednesday’s events ended the week on a sweet note. The local frozen yogurt Nuberri restaurant gave approximately 500 free frozen yogurt samples to students who signed the pledge against hazing. Brock sounded very enthusiastic when saying that about 400 people signed the pledge, a sign that the message seemed to be translating to students.

…..item 1)…. Mail Online … Daily Mail … www.dailymail.co.uk/news … ‘Let’s call it what it is’: Whoopi Goldberg agrees that news anchors should use the ‘n-word’ in stories but gets bleeped out when she says it on air

As ABC’s TV presenter Whoopi Goldberg argued that news reporters should say the n-word in full when quoting people who have used it the station bleeped out the actress as she said ‘n*****’.
Hosting ABC’s The View today, Goldberg supported calls from CNN news anchor Don Lemon to use the word in full when in the context of a news story or directly quoting someone who has used the curse.
But when the Oscar-winning actress was asked by co-host Barbara Walters if she used the word herself Goldberg’s answer was bleeped out.

The Sister Act star had argued that the word should not be eliminated and is made ‘cute’ by being replaced with ‘the N-word’.

Then Walters, who confessed she was uncomfortable even talking about the word, asked Goldberg if she uses the word herself.
Ironically, Goldberg’s answer was bleeped out but she appeared to confirm that she did use it.
‘I am bleeped, ever since the word was buried, you know, there was a whole ceremony with a whole funeral – people buried it. Ever since then, you cannot say the word on television,’ answered Goldberg.
‘They’ve tried to fix ‘Roots,” she continued. ‘They’ve taken it out of books…This idea that taking it out makes it somehow better is ridiculous. It’s part of the culture. Let us speak on it and say this is what it is.’
In recent weeks the issue of whether journalists should say the word in full has been discussed as three CNN news anchors have used ‘n******’ when reporting a story or in context of the debate.

The discussion was particularly poignant because another CNN reporter did just that the following day, leading to a backlash from viewers.
Susan Candiotti was reporting on the Good Friday shooting spree in Tulsa, in which a white man named Jake England randomly gunned down five black victims on the second anniversary of his father’s death – he had been shot dead by an African American.

On Thursday, a day before the shootings, England took to his Facebook page to vent his anger about the man who shot his father dead.
When quoting England’s Facebook page in her news report on Sunday for CNN Newsroom, Susan Candiotti repeated the profanity he used.
‘Today is two years that my dad has been gone, shot by a f****** n*****.’
The network did blur the words out when it showed a graphic of the post.
Ms Candiotti had prefaced the comment by saying, ‘Please excuse the language, it’s very sensitive.’
At the end of Candiotti’s report, anchor Fredricka Whitfield said, ‘We apologize to our viewers for the profanities used.’
Ms Candiotti later apologized, as well saying, ‘In quoting someone else’s words, I repeated their offensive and inappropriate language. I deeply regret it.

Last month CNN reporter Drew Griffin said the n-word on live TV Thursday as he talked about a hate crime case.
Griffin was quoting the words used by Deryl Dedmon, a 19-year-old white Mississippi man convicted of hate crimes for running down black man with his truck and killing him.
Explaining the June killing of Craig Anderson, 47, Griffin says: ‘Deryl Dedmond backs up and gets a good aim and just plows him over on the way out.
‘To be absolutely factual, at the end of this, Deryl Dedmond is laughing with his friends and actually called on his cell phone and, pardon my language but there’s no other way to say this, and said, ‘I just ran over that f*****g ******.’
