How to ask for reference whom you haven’t talked to in a long time?

I have a potential good reference (best I can get) and the problem is that I have not talked to her in a very long time about a year. I am planning on e-mailing her but I am not sure what to say in the letter, for I am kind of worried that it will sound demanding or pushy.

What should I write to her? Like “I hope you are doing fine”, “How have you been?”…?

Also this was one of my old instructors who I did a lot of volunteer work.

Answer by Loving life
say I’m trying to get my life together…new career, and new things. But I’ve been thinking bck to all the good times we had and I just miss us bein g really close, Are you avail. on–whatver day– to hang out?? and then just make sure you keep in contact with her, and do things with her.And then casually say, I’m applying for jobs, do you min d if I list myou as a reference??
