This month’s art class ventured into the Japanese culture and introduced the residents to Gyotaku. Program Director, Angie Garbaczewski, has been wanting to include this in her program. Together with local artist, Sergio "David" Rojas, they instructed the class on the fairly simple technique. This particular form of art is usually applied to actual tree trunks and has been around since the 1800′s. Gyotaku has become popular in the West among all age groups.
For this particular class, the residents covered their fish with black, acrylic paint and then covered the painted side with paper, pressing it into the fish. "Traditionally, the fish are used as a ‘stamp’ and are pushed into the trees until the tree trunk is covered or the fish runs of out of ink/paint. We are doing a reverse, by pushing the paper onto the fish and then slowly peeling it off." said Rojas. The prints turned out beautifully and have a fossil quality about them. Upon arriving to the session, the residents made several jokes about a platter of raw fish waiting for them. However, they were all eager to get started. "It’s been a lot of fun" said Garbaczewski, "a lot of the staff were afraid of the fish and wanted nothing to do with them. The residents had no problem grabbing a fish and getting to work. Mind you, we all had gloves on." she said with a laugh.
A big thanks to Garbaczewski and Rojas for introducing such a unique and interesting art form to our residents. Our goal here is to always be moving forward and creating new and exciting life experiences for everyone who lives here.
